The "Corner Office" column in the New York Times, December 23, 2012, has an interesting interview with Robert J. Murray, the global chief executive of iProspect, a digital marketing agency. He says that he loves to ask applicants why they left jobs. In an excerpt from the article he asks:
“‘What was it about that environment and that experience that made you want to leave?’ I want to get into their thought process. ‘Where did this come to an end where you just didn't think this was meeting your needs?’ That tells me a lot about how they think about culture, and how they may or may not fit in here. Because if someone says, ‘I just didn't feel like I got enough direction,’ that's a red flag for a senior person."
Great interview. Read more.
One thought I often hear about those changing jobs is that you are either running to something or away from something. Drilling down to the "whys" as to each reveals a lot of valuable intel.
