The State Bar of Texas already offers programs aimed at educating elementary and high school students about the nation’s court systems. Its next target: the general public. Incoming State Bar President Gib Walton, a partner in Houston’s Vinson & Elkins, rolled out a public education initiative – to be a major thrust of his year as president – at the Bar’s annual meeting in San Antonio June 21. “Let’s Do Justice for Texas” is meant to educate Texans about the importance of the rule of law. Radio stations in San Antonio are already airing public service announcements, developed as part of the initiative, which focus on the right to trial by jury, access to justice and the independence of the judiciary. The bar turned to one of its own to narrate the PSAs. Mike Terry, a San Antonio lawyer and former radio disc jockey, is the voice on the first three recorded messages. Walton is hoping to take the PSAs to radio stations around the state.
