Corporate and securities lawyers Bryan K. Brown and Marlen Whitley joined Reed Smith as partners in Houston on Nov. 14, coming from Thompson & Knight’s Houston office.
The addition of Brown and Whitley boosts the size of Reed Smith’s Houston office to 36 lawyers. The firm moved into Houston in January.
David Thompson, the integration partner who moved to Houston from the firm’s San Francisco office, said the objective is to build a full-service office in Houston, and Whitley and Brown bring transactional expertise.
Whitley, who does mergers and acquisitions, private equity work, securities, and public and private offerings, said he is excited about the opportunity to expand his practice nationally and internationally.
“It was a very attractive proposition,” he said.
Brown said he made the move because of Reed Smith’s capital markets practice, and the firm’s goal of expanding its strength in the energy and health-care areas, which are two areas in which he’s worked. He does global and U.S. capital markets transactions, mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, high-yield debt offerings, initial public offerings, and secondary and convertible offerings.
Brown and Whitley, who share some clients, each declined to identify their clients.
In an emailed response to a request for comment, Thompson & Knight provided this statement from managing partner Emily Parker: “While we regret Bryan and Marlen’s decision to leave the firm, we recognize such departures will occur in this dynamic legal market. We wish them the very best.”
