Former students, colleagues and friends of University of Texas School of Law professor Ernest E. Smith (pictured) are celebrating his 50th anniversary of teaching with a youtube.com tribute.
Smith earned his law degree from Harvard, clerked at the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, then began teaching. He served as the UT law school dean for five years in the 1970s, hiring the first women law professors, before returning to teaching.
Among those honoring the oil and gas law professor is former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, a 1967 UT law school graduate. With fracking revitalizing the oil and gas industry, many of Smith’s former students in the YouTube video remark that his stature will continue to grow, as Texas continues to set the global ground rules for how the energy game is played.
