“The matter is still under investigation. What I can tell you is that Judge Greenwell was found in his chambers at approximately 6 p.m. by a courthouse cleaning staff with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” says Captain Monica Rios.
The Republican judge was universally liked by Corpus Christi lawyers, says David Bright, an attorney with Corpus Christi’s Sico, White, Hoelscher & Braugh.
“I know that there were hundreds and hundreds of people showing up at work today with blank expressions, not able to make sense of it,” Bright says. “I’m completely shocked, just completely shocked and have no explanation. I don’t know of anyone who ran into him at any time, including recently, who would have suspected there was anything wrong whatsoever. He was extremely friendly and funny and engaging. I can give you five other people to call, and you’re going to hear the same thing.”
Greenwell was elected to the trial bench in 2002, defeating incumbent Democrat Martha Huerta, who had defeated Greenwell in 1998.
