Jon R. Ray, formerly the head of the energy and natural resources department at Cox Smith Matthews, has joined Winstead as a shareholder in San Antonio.
Ray (pictured) says he joined Cox Smith after graduating from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1977. He says he decided to move to Winstead because it was a great opportunity.
“The Winstead firm has really been building its energy practice in its various offices,” Ray says. “This was an opportunity for me to play a role in that.”
Ray says he is board certified in oil, gas and mineral law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is assigned to the energy and environmental practice group at Winstead. He says he also is in the firm’s energy industry focus group.
Although his practice focuses primarily on handling oil and gas transactions for exploration and production companies, Ray says that he has had some involvement in litigation, primarily as an adviser. He says that he has been involved most recently in transactions involving activity in the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas and the Bakken Shale in the northern United States.
Ray says he has been surprised at how smooth his transition to Winstead has been and credits his new colleagues with making the move easy for him.
“I’m having fun,” Ray says. “It’s a nice place.”
