In October, the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) presented the 2012 M. Dale Ensign Trustee Leadership Award to Gary Gurwitz (pictured), managing partner of Atlas, Hall & Rodriguez in McAllen.
Gurwitz says he was one of five regional winners whom ACCT considered for the award, which the association presented at its annual convention in Boston.
“I was quite honored and very surprised,” he says.
Gurwitz says the award “is for the community college trustee in the nation who makes the most significant contribution as a lay trustee to promote the community college concept.” The award is named for Ensign, who was instrumental in organizing the ACCT.
Gurwitz says he has served on the board of trustees for South Texas College for the past 19 years, appointed by former Gov. Ann Richards. He says the college serves Hidalgo and Starr counties, with its main campus in McAllen.
“I’ve got four more years on the board,” Gurwitz says, adding that he has found his work on behalf of South Texas College “very satisfying.”
Gurwitz says he has been with Atlas, Hall for 51 years and focuses his practice on litigation.
