St. Mary’s University School of Law professor Michael Ariens will call the procession to order Oct. 24 at the Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio, as members of the legal community prepare to walk to San Fernando Cathedral to celebrate Red Mass.
“I’m simply in charge of making sure everybody is in the right place,” Ariens says.
The Red Mass is a centuries-old Roman Catholic tradition.
“The mass signifies, traditionally, the opening of the judicial and legislative year, and so it helps join the two things that are of interest to me, my law and my faith,” Ariens says.
The procession of jurists, lawyers, students, paralegals and court reporters will begin at 5:45 p.m. and arrive at the cathedral for the 6 p.m. mass, he says. The cathedral’s address is 115 Main Plaza, and the public is invited to attend the event.
This is the 60th year that the law school has been involved with the Catholic Lawyers Guild of San Antonio in coordinating the event.
“It’s a nice tradition that we have,” Ariens says.
