Baker Botts opened an office in Brussels today in an effort to strengthen its antitrust and competition law practice.
Catriona Hatton is the new partner in charge of the Brussels office, and Paul Lugard has also joined the firm as a partner there. Hatton is former managing partner of the Hogan Lovells office in Brussels, and Lugard is the former global head of competition law at Royal Philips Electronics.
Baker Botts’ head of litigation Robb Voyles (pictured), a partner in Dallas, says the firm has planned to open an office in Brussels since the spring of 2011, when the firm added more than 40 antitrust lawyers. Those lawyers include a large group from Howrey in Washington, D.C.
“Historically, it has been a strong practice area for us, and we wanted to get back into it in a big way,” Voyles says. “You’ve got to be in Europe, particularly in Brussels.”
Voyles says the firm plans to hire a number of associates in Brussels in addition to the two partners. The Brussels office is the 14th for Houston-based Baker Botts.

My experience with Twitter has been good. It has helped me become a better lawyer by exposing me to informative tweets on employment law and jury persuasion. It also has allowed me to do some teaching. Give it a try, but do so with awareness and compassion.
