Austin commercial litigator Blair Dancy likes helping artists turn their creative activities into successful businesses. Dancy, a partner in Austin’s Van Osselaer & Buchanan, is a board member of Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA), a state-wide pro bono group that offers services to artists.
The TALA announced on April 26 the opening of an Austin office in the headquarters of the Austin Creative Alliance at 701 Tillery St., he says.
“Studies match a thriving artist community to a thriving community overall, and helping them turn their art into a viable business is a key part of what we do,” he says. “It’s so fun. It’s a ton of fun.”
Referrals for TALA pro bono work usually involve intellectual property matters rather than litigation, family or criminal law, says Dancy, a commercial litigator.
Lawyers can go online at www.talarts.org or call 512-247-2531 to offer to help, he says. Dancy says he has artists in his family and also does some creative writing. “I have a passion for the arts,” he says. “This is something close to my heart. Artists are all budding entrepreneurs when they begin.”
