Bad news if you’re a patent lawyer: David Folsom (pictured) of Texarkana, chief judge of the Eastern District of Texas, will no longer be available to hear your extremely complicated patent infringement case after March 31, 2012, because both he and his robe are retiring. Then-President Bill Clinton appointed Folsom to the bench in 1995, and the U.S. Senate confirmed him on St. Patrick’s Day of that same year. He recently celebrated his 16th year on the federal bench. The Eastern District is one of the most popular venues in the nation for patent litigation. He says he’s leaving the bench at the end of March 2012, because that’s the month he turns 65. “I went on the bench when I was 48,” Folsom says. “My course was always to retire at age 65 and start another career.” Folsom hasn’t decided what that career will be yet. But in the immediate future Folsom says he hopes to “have a little more time to travel and play golf and enjoy the things I like to do.’’ Folsom has not yet informed the White House of his impending retirement. When asked when he started telling people his intentions to retire, Folsom replied with a laugh, “Sixteen years ago.”
