Imagine the freedom that retirement from the practice of law brings: no more partner meetings; no more 80-hour workweeks; and, if you’re so inclined, you can post whatever photo you want on your State Bar of Texas profile page. Take, for instance, retired Austin lawyer Charles William "Bill" Burton's picture on the State Bar website (left). It’s probably not him, unless he bears a remarkable resemblance to a young Muhammad Ali, aka Cassius Clay. (To quote one of Arsenio Hall's characters in the great movie "Coming to America": “His mama named him Clay, so I’m gonna call him Clay.”) I tried to locate Burton to no avail. A Bar spokeswoman even searched for a contact telephone number for him but came up with nothing. I did click on a website link Burton posted on his Bar profile, hoping to find a clue as to his whereabouts, but it took me to a site that lists the lyrics to The Beatles song “Across the Universe.” Will Burton ever take down that photo or return to the practice of law? The answer may be in the refrain to that song: “Nothing’s going to change my world, nothing’s going to change my world.” And for that, I salute you Charles William "Bill" Burton of Austin.
