Those who watch the comings and goings of Texas government lawyers likely won’t be surprised that Gov. Rick Perry has hired now-former Thompson & Knight senior partner Jeff Boyd as his new general counsel. Boyd has never been far from government work, leaving Thompson & Knight in 2000 to head the Civil Litigation Division of Texas Attorney General’s office under then-AG John Cornyn — a job Boyd kept under AG Greg Abbott until he returned to Thompson & Knight in 2003. Boyd is also a member of the Texas Supreme Court Rules Advisory Committee and past president and board member of Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas. “Jeff brings extensive legal expertise in a variety of issues the Governor’s Office handles on a day to day basis. His guidance will be integral as we navigate the challenges our state faces moving forward,” Perry said in a prepared statement. Boyd couldn’t be reached for comment. But the last time I spoke with Boyd, he guided me to the best ugly courthouse I’ve ever seen for Texas Lawyer's This Old Courthouse series in 2009. Boyd suggested I check out the Austin County Courthouse in Bellville, a monstrosity he passes regularly on the way to visit his in-laws. “I go there all of the time," Boyd says of Bellville, which is in Southeast Texas. "And I think, 'This could be the prettiest town square if there weren't that cube of ice sitting in the middle of it.' "
