So what’s next for Ted Cruz?

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, made it official today that she will not resign her Senate seat. That leaves former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz, who had hoped to run as a Republican for Texas attorney general, no opening to run. The dominoes just aren’t falling this year. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who was considered a potential candidate for lieutenant governor, is running to keep his job. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who was considered a potential candidate for the U.S. Senate, also is running for his current post. Cruz, now a partner in Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Houston and Washington, D.C., sent an e-mail this afternoon to thank all his supporters. Any supporters who contributed financially to his now-canceled campaign can, if they want, get their money returned pro rata, Cruz wrote. He also promised in the e-mail to keep speaking out on issues. And, according to the e-mail, while he won’t be a candidate this year, Cruz plans to run for public office “very soon.” Cruz did not indicate in the e-mail what office he might seek or when he might enter a race. He also did not return two telephone calls seeking comment.
