Ohio firm Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease moved into the Texas market when it opened an office in Houston on Feb. 9. David Oliver, who does personal injury and toxic tort defense work, left Porter & Hedges to become a partner in Vorys, a 380-lawyer firm based in Columbus. Three associates who worked with Oliver at Porter & Hedges made the move with him: Tiffany Briscoe Bingham, Paul Kerlin and Sharon Wendell. Jonathan Norman, chairman of Vorys’ strategic opportunities committee, says the Texas expansion is based on client needs. “We have a number of good clients, recognizable household names, that have legal needs in Houston and Texas,” Norman says. Norman declines to identify those clients but says Houston clients include some in the petrochemical industry. Oliver says he enjoyed Porter & Hedges, but he got to know lawyers from Vorys by working together over several years on litigation, and it made sense for his practice to join the firm. Norman says the firm has room in its Houston space for eight or 10 more lawyers, and the long-term goal is to build a full-service office. Vorys also has offices in Cincinnati; Cleveland; Washington, D.C.; Akron, Ohio; and Alexandria, Va. William Porter, a partner in Porter & Hedges, says Oliver left with the firm’s blessing.
