With Hurricane Ike nearing Gulf Coast communities, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott on Thursday announced a new service that will make information on registered sex offenders available to personnel at evacuation shelters. Effective Sept. 11, personnel at evacuation facilities can call the Safe Shelter Hotline at (866) 385-0333, and Texas Office of the Attorney General personnel will assist them in determining whether any of their evacuees are included in the Texas Department of Public Safety’s sex offender registry. According to an OAG press release, the 24-hour hotline will continue operations until emergency conditions subside.
