Roy Barrera Sr. (pictured), senior partner in San Antonio’s Nicholas & Barrera, became the latest inductee into the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association’s Hall of Fame on June 29 during the 21st Annual Rusty Duncan Criminal Law Course in San Antonio. According to a TCDLA press release, Barrera has been associated with Anthony Nicholas for more than 50 years, the oldest unchanged legal partnership in San Antonio. (Read the Texas Lawyer story on the half-century legal partnership here.) In the 1950s, Barrera and Nicholas served as the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office first-chair felony prosecutors in San Antonio’s only two district courts at that time. They left the DA’s office to form their own criminal-defense firm. However, Barrera took time out from his work as a lawyer in 1968 to serve as secretary of state under then-Texas Gov. John Connally.
