A Gregg County court is poised to rule on a groundbreaking case in the emerging field of contests-gone-seriously-wrong law. On Sept. 15, 2005, Richard Thomas Vega entered a “Hands on a Hardbody” contest held at Patterson Nissan of Longview. In trying to win a new Nissan truck, Vega kept his hands on a Hardbody truck for 48 hours. “The conditions of the contest caused Richard Vega to become temporarily insane and to take his own life,” states the suit filed by Vega’s survivors against Patterson Motors of Longview Inc. On May 31, a Gregg County district court is scheduled to hear a motion for summary judgment.
